Homesickness without leaving home

Dear internet,

It hit me yesterday pretty hard, the feeling of being tired of all the covid-19 restrictions on activities. I live in DC but all I do is take walks and stay in my flat. Possibly this feeling was enhanced by the building AC breaking on a day with a heat index of 102.

The building AC wasn’t broken, but the management decided yesterday, a day with a heat index of 102,* was the day to do “necessary repairs.” they switched off the ac at 10 am and the heat crept up and up.

That is how I found myself around 2 pm yesterday, sitting in my air-conditioned car with a napping il Bambino stretched out like a koala on my body, thinking, how did we get here? In normal times I would have gone to some air-conditioned place, chilled with my family, heck, gotten a hotel if it was really bad. But instead, the best and really only option is sitting in a running car with the AC on blast.

We made it work, but should we really have had to make it work? How much energy do we have to keep making it work?

yours,

Daya

*I cannot believe the building management couldn’t have waited until literally any other day this week when the weather was predicted to be in the 80s, to complete the repairs. There are a lot of elderly people / some babies in the building. Sadists.

Too many trolls

Dear internet,

Why are people even questioning if children transmit coronavirus?

The internet has gotten to be too much. people are mean and crazy and I don’t know if it is getting worse than normal or my tolerance has dipped way down.

yours,

Daya

Monday, September 6, 2021

Dear internet,

here are my predictions for the course of coronavirus in the US:

  1. vaccine available in January 2021 for high-risk groups (elderly, healthcare workers, etc)
  2. vaccine available in March 2021 for people who want it and seek it out; adults only
  3. vaccine available in July 2021 for anyone and everyone, including children. lots of “get vaccinated” publicity campaigns everywhere.
  4. Labor Day 2021 (Monday September 6, 2021): life back to normal. we get coronavirus vaccines with our flu vaccines every year. Maybe the net benefit is people will actually get flu shots now.

What do you think?

yours,

Daya

DC’s new masks in public mandate

Dear internet,

So DC is now requiring masks everywhere in public.

When the whole coronavirus outbreak started, I was really annoyed at the concept of masks because I thought they served no health-related purpose.* And it’s true that ye olde DIY mask is not an effective barrier to germ transmission. However, wearing a mask does serve a public health purpose, in that it keeps people distant from each other. It’s like a reminder that you shouldn’t get too close. So I changed my mind. Masks are fine.

yours,

Daya

*It is kind of remarkable at how spending 4 months sheltering in place has suddenly turned everyone into a scientific expert (based entirely on the conspiracy videos popping on my youtube feed.) I just watched a video about how there is no coronavirus, delivered by a professor…of communications. Yes, an expert in *communications* is pontificating on science.

It’s like people are too stupid to realize how stupid they are.

Confidence: what substitutes for knowledge in our postmodern world.

DC Swamp Water vs. My Brita Filter

Dear internet,

1. The protestors must be very dedicated because it is so hot and swampy outside right now. I could not be bothered to go outside for an ice cream today, so I am impressed that people are out there, exercising their civic pride.

2. These are the days that my brita pitcher can’t keep up.* the water comes out the faucet hot and i need to start making water bottles in my fridge so I don’t have to drink gaggy warmish water.

3. Today was a good day to clean the apartment so we did that. It fairly sparkles and it’s a good feeling.

By the way I’ve never bought lysol spray before. I was almost out of my regular generic bathroom cleaner back in march and it was the last bottle of anything antiseptic on the shelf at the store.  I bought it, a rather gigantic bottle, and have been working my way through it.

I don’t get the hype about lysol wipes and sprays etc. I guess they have excellent marketing and it makes people feel all warm and cosy when they smell it or something.

I should talk. I buy morton salt specifically for the picture. and the worcestershire sauce that comes in a little brown bag because it adds a little pizazz to the shelf in my icebox.

4. I continue the adam sandler movie marathon. today’s film is “just go with it.” Babbo refused to watch past the first ten minutes. “that is the best part of these movies. they should just make the entire movie like that.” Fair enough.

5. Rescheduled my antibody testing for the second time due to the downpour. When will I find out if I had coronavirus? Maybe never. Or maybe sometime next week.

yours,

Daya

*Good ole’ dc swamp water. At least it has not turned green yet.
